Paws-itively Perfect: Why You Should Consider Having Your Dog at Your Wedding

Confession time: I’m a sucker for dogs at weddings. As a Derbyshire wedding photographer as well as a dog photographer, I’ve seen it all, but nothing quite steals the show like a furry four-legged friend making a grand entrance. Take my own rescue Patterpoo, Tucker, for example (that handsome chap in the photo below!). This little guy has more energy than a toddler on a sugar rush and the confidence of a Hollywood A-lister. He’d thrive as the centre of attention at a wedding, and let’s be honest, who wouldn’t love a dose of that infectious canine enthusiasm on their big day?

Imagine this: you’re standing at the altar, about to say “I do” to the love of your life, and your furry best friend is right there by your side, tail wagging with excitement. Sounds pretty perfect, right? More and more couples are realising the magic of including their dogs in their wedding celebrations, and it’s easy to see why!

Dogs bring an undeniable sense of joy and love to any occasion. They’re our constant companions, our furry confidantes, and they deserve to be a part of one of the biggest days of our lives. Not only do they add a personal touch that truly reflects who you are as a couple, but their presence can also help calm those pre-wedding jitters. Plus, let’s be honest, who can resist those adorable photo opportunities?

The Many “Jobs” of a Wedding Dog

Your dog can play a variety of roles in your wedding, from the traditional to the simply adorable:

Ring Bearer

This classic role carries a weight of responsibility! Your furry friend can proudly prance down the aisle with the precious rings, but take precautions. Secure the rings in a stylish pouch or a custom-made pillow attached to their harness. A little practice beforehand will ensure a smooth delivery and an adorable moment.

Flower Girl/Boy

Let your pet add a touch of floral flair! Instead of a traditional basket, consider a floral collar or a delicate leash adorned with blooms. Their presence will bring a unique charm as they scatter petals or simply walk alongside the human flower girl, creating a picture-perfect scene.

Official Greeter

Your dog’s natural enthusiasm makes them the perfect candidate for this role. With a wagging tail and a friendly demeanor, they can welcome guests as they arrive, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. A cute sign or a bandana that says “Welcome!” will add a playful touch.

VIP (Very Important Pup)

For those inseparable bonds, having your dog by your side throughout the ceremony is a must. They can sit or stand with you, offering silent support and unwavering love. This simple yet meaningful gesture will make your special day even more memorable.

Planning for a Paw-some Day

Before you get carried away with visions of your dog walking down the aisle, there are a few crucial things to consider:

  • Venue and Vendor Approval: First things first, make sure your venue allows pets and that your photographer, caterer, and other vendors are comfortable with a four-legged guest.
  • Your Dog’s Personality: Is your dog well-trained and comfortable in new environments with lots of people? If not, it might be best to leave them at home.
  • Logistics, Logistics, Logistics: Who will be responsible for your dog throughout the day? Will they need walks, feeding, and bathroom breaks?
  • Guest Considerations: Do any of your guests have allergies or phobias? Make sure everyone feels comfortable and safe.

Keeping Your Canine Comfortable

Your wedding day is about celebrating your love, but it’s important to remember your dog’s needs as well:

  • Designated Handler: Assign a trusted friend or family member to be your dog’s handler for the day.
  • Quiet Space: Provide a crate or designated quiet area where your dog can retreat if they get overwhelmed.
  • Home Away from Home: Bring familiar items like their favorite toys, bedding, and treats to help them feel secure.
  • Toilet Breaks and Exercise: Don’t forget those bathroom breaks and a little exercise to avoid any accidents!

Picture Perfect Moments

With a little planning, your dog can be a fantastic addition to your wedding photos:

Photographer Briefing

Before your wedding day arrives, take some time to connect with your photographer. It’s a wonderful opportunity to discuss the specific shots you envision and brainstorm creative, dog-friendly photo ideas. Sharing your vision will ensure that your photographer captures the unique bond you share with your furry companion, resulting in cherished memories that last a lifetime.

Dog-Themed Stationery

Consider featuring your beloved dog on your wedding stationery. Whether it’s a playful save-the-date or a formal invitation, incorporating your dog’s image adds a personal and heartwarming touch. Your guests will surely smile when they see your furry friend included in your wedding celebrations.

Can’t Bring Your Dog? No Problem!

If your venue doesn’t allow dogs or your pup isn’t quite cut out for a big celebration, there are still ways to include them in spirit:

  • Signature Cocktails: Name a drink after your dog!
  • Dog-Themed Decor: Incorporate dog-shaped figurines, paw prints, or even a dog-themed card box.
  • Photo Memories: Display photos of your dog throughout the reception.

A Day to Remember

Including your dog in your wedding can create truly unforgettable memories. With careful planning and consideration for both your dog’s needs and your guests’ comfort, you can ensure a paw-sitively perfect day for everyone. After all, our dogs are family, and what better way to celebrate your love than with your furry best friend by your side?/h
