A Cosy Autumn Wedding at Makeney Hall | Derbyshire Wedding Photographer

Couple kissing at wooden wedding ceremony venue.

Some weddings just feel like home.

Not in a literal sense, but in the way they’re built around comfort, familiarity, and being surrounded by people who really matter. Matt and Erin’s autumn wedding at Makeney Hall was exactly that. Warm, relaxed, full of quiet magic, and completely true to them.

As a Makeney Hall wedding photographer, it’s days like this that remind me why this venue works so beautifully for couples who want atmosphere without formality, and connection without pressure.

Matt & Erin’s Story: From a Fish and Chip Shop to Forever

Matt and Erin met in the most ordinary of places. A part-time job in a fish and chip shop, Erin working alongside her university studies while Matt was finishing his accountancy qualifications. Eight years later, both qualified, settled into careers they love, and still thankful for the place that brought them together.

Their proposal, though, was anything but ordinary.

On their five-year anniversary, Matt planned a trip to London. London already held deep meaning for them, their first trip away together, and St James’s Park, the place where Erin realised she loved Matt just a few months into dating (even if she was too nervous to say it at the time).

Walking through the park on the way to see Wicked, Matt stopped by the fountain and casually mentioned he had two surprises. One in his pocket. One on his phone.

Erin chose the pocket.

Matt dropped to one knee.

After the tears, the yes, and a few moments to catch their breath, the second surprise appeared. Eurostar tickets. The London trip was only part of the plan. Paris was next. Passports packed, euros sorted, travel insurance arranged, all without Erin having a clue.

They spent the next few days in their own little bubble, calling Paris their “engagement-moon,” complete with a night-time cruise along the Seine, champagne in hand. Thoughtful, romantic, and quietly unforgettable, very Matt and Erin.

The Vision: Cosy, Autumnal and Effortlessly Relaxed

From the beginning, Matt and Erin were clear about how they wanted their wedding day to feel. Cosy, autumnal, and welcoming. A great atmosphere where everyone could relax and genuinely enjoy themselves.

No stuffy moments. No rigid traditions for the sake of it. Just warmth, laughter, and time together.

Their colour palette reflected the season they love most — rich greens and burnt oranges layered through the styling. Both big fantasy readers, they added subtle nods to that world without it ever feeling themed.

Matt gave his groomsmen pin badges inspired by the leaves of Lothlórien, his own quiet “fellowship.” The woodland ceremony space at Makeney Hall made it feel as though they’d stepped straight into a fantasy world, without needing to force anything.

Why Matt & Erin Chose Makeney Hall

Choosing the right venue mattered, especially with guests travelling from all over the world, including one guest flying in from Australia.

On-site accommodation was a huge priority, and Makeney Hall offered plenty of it, alongside stunning grounds, a beautiful outdoor ceremony area, and a light-filled conservatory that instantly stood out from anywhere else they’d seen.

Then there was the food.

From the day they got engaged, Matt and Erin joked about wanting a hog roast in the evening. Makeney Hall didn’t just allow it, they embraced it. Hearty, generous food that kept everyone full and happy, with more than a few guests commenting it was the most food they’d ever seen at a wedding.

As a Derbyshire wedding photographer, it’s easy to see why Makeney Hall continues to be such a popular choice. It offers flexibility, warmth, and a sense of ease that allows the day to unfold naturally.

Planning the Day: What Mattered Most

Matt and Erin’s top three priorities were clear.

First, making the day accessible for their guests, especially with so many travelling long distances.

Second, the food. They wanted no one to go hungry, and judging by the feedback, they absolutely nailed it.

And finally, the timeline. Keeping things relaxed, minimising stress, and spending as much time as possible with the people they love.

The most challenging part of planning was the guest list. Deciding who attended the day versus the evening brought its fair share of guilt and pressure. In the end, they focused on what felt right for them, and it all worked out exactly as it should.

The most enjoyable part came at the very start. Venue viewings while freshly engaged, with no deadlines or pressure. Coffee dates, lunches out, and wandering around beautiful spaces together, imagining what could be. Those early moments felt genuinely magical.

The Wedding Day: A Quiet Kind of Magic

By the time the ceremony arrived, nerves were running high, especially for Erin. When she reached Matt, he held her hands tightly, grounding her, and everything else seemed to fade away.

The woodland ceremony space created a naturally intimate atmosphere, and when they were announced as husband and wife, the cheers were met with perfectly timed howls from their Malamute (and ring bearer), Draco.

Draco’s howling became a running theme throughout the day, respectfully quiet during emotional moments, but always joining in when the cheering started. Easily one of the most memorable and loved parts of the ceremony.

Walking back up the aisle together, Matt and Erin whispered to each other, “We did it.” A small moment, but one filled with meaning.

The Reception: Speeches, Stories and So Much Love

The reception was full of personality and heart. The speeches were a standout, heartfelt, funny, and completely unique, with video cameos from favourite TV and film characters and Taylor Swift lyrics woven throughout.

Later in the evening, the atmosphere softened into something beautifully relaxed. Guests mingled, caught up with people they hadn’t seen in years, and filled the rooms with laughter. It felt like there was an overwhelming amount of love in one space.

Matt and Erin’s first dance to La Vie en Rose was a quiet nod back to Paris and their engagement, short, meaningful, and perfectly them.

Personal Touches That Made It Theirs

Personal details were everywhere, but never loud.

Blanket boxes with personalised tags. Wooden games set up in the drawing room. Wine glass charms doubling as place settings so guests could always find their drink later.

During the wedding breakfast, Polaroid photos sat on each table. Table numbers represented years of Matt and Erin’s relationship, with photos from each year placed accordingly, inviting guests to travel through their story together.

Every detail had thought behind it. Hours spent crafting, cutting, and creating, all worth it when everything came together.

Photographing Matt & Erin’s Wedding at Makeney Hall

We first met at a wedding fair at Makeney Hall, and from that first conversation, it felt easy. Comfortable. Like chatting with friends.

On the day itself, my role was simply to blend in, offer calm where it was needed, and document the day as it unfolded naturally.

Their gallery included hundreds of images, but one stood out above the rest. A quiet moment in the drawing room, Matt and Erin sitting together on the sofa with Draco beside them. Timeless, calm, and full of presence. It’s the image they chose for their thank you cards, and it’s easy to see why.

Final Thoughts

When asked to describe their wedding day in three words, Matt and Erin said: Start of forever.

And that feels exactly right.

Their advice to other couples planning their wedding is simple. You can plan everything to a T, but on the day itself, let things unfold. Little things won’t go exactly as expected, and no one else will notice. What matters is how it feels.

And this day felt warm, calm, and deeply loved.

A Little Note from Me

There are a few moments from Matt and Erin’s day that have stayed with me.

First, Draco. Their Malamute, absolute star of the show, perfectly timed howls and all. Having him there mattered, and knowing he was so well looked after by Kate from Bow-Tiful Walks meant Matt and Erin could fully relax and enjoy having their best mate by their side.

Then there were the speeches. One of the video messages popped up on screen, and suddenly Jay from The Inbetweeners appeared. The split-second eye contact between me and my second photographer said everything, both of us trying (and failing) not to laugh as the room erupted.

There’s also one moment from the morning that still makes me smile every time I see it. The girls mid-toast, glasses raised, laughter everywhere, and Erin right at the back, champagne bottle in hand, quietly stealing the scene. It was one of those “OK ladies, just clink your glasses” moments that turned into something completely real. Possibly my favourite bridal prep photo I’ve ever taken.

But more than any single moment, what really defined this wedding was how easy it all felt.

Matt and Erin. Their families. Their friends. Everyone brought such calm, warmth, and openness to the day. No tension, no rushing, no performance, just people showing up with love. The kind of atmosphere that lets a wedding breathe.

A few days after the wedding, Erin sent me a message reflecting on the morning. She spoke honestly about feeling overwhelmed once her dress was on, how the nerves of the day caught up with her in a way she didn’t expect. Reading her words later was a reminder of something I see often but never take lightly, how important it is to give people space to feel what they’re feeling, without pressure to push through it.

She talked about being grateful she was able to slow things down, change the music, do what she needed in that moment, and still look back knowing the story of that morning was gently and safely held. She also shared how meaningful it was to later see the preview photos and feel like she could finally see parts of the day she couldn’t remember at the time.

Those messages stay with me. Not as praise, but as quiet confirmation of why I work the way I do.

Matt and Erin’s wedding wasn’t about perfection or sticking to a plan. It was about care. Trust. Letting the day unfold as it needed to. And because of that, it became something deeply real and unforgettable.

A truly relaxed, beautiful, love-filled day, from start to forever.

The Suppliers

No wedding day comes together on its own. Matt and Erin were supported by an incredible group of people who brought care, creativity, and calm energy to every part of the day. Each supplier played their part quietly and thoughtfully, helping the day unfold naturally and allowing Matt and Erin to stay present with their people. I’m always grateful to work alongside teams like this, it makes such a difference to the experience, not just the end result.
